"My Child has difficulties with Communication and Interaction"

This can include:

  1. Understanding language
  2. Using language
  3. Understanding how to communicate socially with other people
  4. Conditions include: Specific Language Disorder, ASD/ASC (Autism), Asperger Syndrome, speech sound disorders/delay
  5. Stammering – advice given to families about how to access support from outside agencies
  6. Please see separate section of the website for EAL (English as an Additional Language) services in the school - comin soon

"What can Parrs Wood High School offer?"

All our students at PWHS can access:

  1. Quality First teaching with appropriate differentiation
  2. Use of technology to support interactive learning
  3. Access to homework support clubs
  4. Regular reading sessions during tutor time to further reading skills
  5. Access to assessment for identification of significant needs
  6. Dedicated and caring staff who value all students regardless of ability
  7. Gifted and Talented
  8. Sixth Form Mentor

Targetted students at PWHS can access:

  1. Assessment and identification of language need and feedback to parents and staff
  2. Small group sessions with a specialist teacher or Learning Support Assistant using Speech and Language Therapist Modules including; vocabulary, inference and deduction, social communication eg: Lego therapy
  3. Regular feedback to student, parents and staff
  4. In-class Learning Support Assistant support in some lessons
  5. Year 7 groups with smaller teacher pupil ratio, specifically designed curriculum and one classroom as a base for most subjects

Please note: These options need to be agreed upon for each student in conjunction with parents/carers and then regularly reviewed/modified.

Targeted Individual support can access:

  1. Advice from a Speech and Language Therapist or 1:1 sessions
  2. 1:1 sessions with other specialist staff in the school, linked to other needs on EHCP and Individual Learning Support Assistant support in some mainstream lessons
  3. On-going monitoring and regular feedback to parents and students (at least termly and including the Annual Review)
  4. Exam access arrangements
  5. Post 16 transition support
  6. Inclusion Classroom lunchtime club
  7. Support through social stories and narrative therapy
  8. Family Liaison Officer for parental support
